It can be difficult sometimes to ask questions that involve such sensitive areas of your body, but we strongly encourage asking them and seeking out your health care provider (HCP) when such concerns arise.

Painful urination (also known as “dysuria” ) and/or frequent urination (known as “urinary frequency”) are common signs of inflammation or infection of the urethra, which is the small opening where pee comes out of the penis. Discharge from the penis may or may not be present. In guys, it can be difficult to distinguish between a urinary tract infection (UTI) (which is a bacterial infection involving the kidney, ureters, bladder or urethra) and a sexually transmitted infection (STI), so laboratory testing of the urine or discharge is often needed. It’s very important to make an appointment with your HCP as soon as possible so that you can get checked and treated right away. Let your HCP know if: the color of your urine has changed, it hurts when you pee, you have back pain and/or a fever, or if you have ever had unprotected sexual intercourse. If lab testing shows you have either a UTI or STI, there are highly effective treatments available. If your HCP prescribes one or more antibiotics, be sure to finish all of your medicine even if you start to feel better within a couple of days. Be sure to let your provider know if your symptoms are not getting better.

I have a 15-year-old brother that won’t eat. He only eats carbs, sugar and crap even though our mom fixes wonderful meals like roast beef, chicken, hamburgers, etc. with potatoes and veggies and homemade treats. My brother is very skinny– weighs under 130 and he is almost 6 feet tall. My family is very concerned about him, because sometimes he will go all day without eating. I have spent days with him, where he does not eat all day, and then when he does eat, its crackers, cold cereal, cookies, top ramen, and any candy he can find. He also sneaks any kind of pop; Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper and Coke. In addition, my brother was diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). He pulls and tugs on his hair all the time, to the point that he pulls some of it out, and has bald spots on the top of his head. His ADHD meds seem to kill his appetite even more. My family and I are worried and want to help my brother but we don’t know how. PLEASE help us. Thanks. https://youngmenshealthsite.org/askus/i-have-a-15-year-old-brother-that-wont-eat/ Mon, 01 Oct 2018 12:00:13 +0000 https://youngmenshealthsite.org/?p=100828 ... read more]]> There a few things that are concerning in your questions. As you realize, your brother’s eating behaviors are not healthy for a boy his age or height. It sounds like when he does eat, there is not much nutrition in his food choices.  One concern is his ADHD medication.  Most medications for ADHD are stimulants and suppress appetite.  If he needs the medication to be able to perform in school, his health care provider should counsel him on when he should take his (ADHD) meds.  For example: He may be able to eat breakfast first, before the medicine gets into his system.  Also, he is old enough to understand that he needs to eat, even if he does not feel hungry.  There are also medications for ADHD that do not suppress appetite, thus you or another family member could talk to your brother’s health care provider about the possibility of changing this medication.  It is also possible that your brother is developing or has developed an eating disorder which would interfere with his desire to eat and also cause significant weight loss.   Depression is another reason that people experience a loss of appetite. It is also of concern that your brother is pulling his hair out.  This is a sign of an emotional problems such as anxiety.  There is therapy and medication that can be helpful for this as well; however, you or one of your parents will need to talk to your brother’s health care provider about all of your concerns.  Typically, a young man with the kind of problems you describe, would benefit from having a comprehensive mental health evaluation by a mental health professional such as a psychologist, psychiatrist or clinical social worker who can evaluate him for these problems and help him on the path to a healthier and happier life.

I’m afraid I’m already seeing the effects of male pattern baldness at 17. I think I’ve slowly been losing my hair for a little less than a year but haven’t fully noticed until a couple months ago. I’m getting worried that it’ll get worse, or be completely irreversible. Teenage guys and young men are sometimes affected with male pattern baldness (medical name: Androgenic Alopecia) which is the most common cause of hair loss among adolescent males. Male pattern baldness gets its name because the hair falls out from the scalp in the same pattern in most guys. It is a result of a combination of androgens (male hormones) and “genes” (features that you inherit from your parents and you also pass down to your children). However, there can be other factors that can contribute to hair thinning and loss such as a reaction to a new hair product, low iron levels, lack of certain vitamins from poor nutrition, an infection, an overactive thyroid condition or other medical illnesses, certain medicines such as anabolic steroids, and stress or a traumatic event can also cause temporary hair loss. Sometimes if the source of the problem is treated such as improving eating habits, hair can grow back. Other times the hair loss can be permanent. Most guys worry about hair loss at some point in their life. Since you’ve noticed hair loss over several months, it’s a good idea to make an appointment with your health care provider and get checked out.

Here’s a tip on how to bring up the topic with your health care provider: “I’ve noticed that my hair is getting thinner. Is there anything I can do?

I noticed that when I am in PE class or just when I walk home from school, I sweat a lot while my friends don’t seem to sweat. Rings around your armpits can be embarrassing for sure but there is an explanation and treatment. Sweating is common especially during puberty because this is the time when your sweat glands become more active. It is not only normal but also natural for everyone’s body to sweat when they are hot, after exercising and also when they are nervous or stressed such as before an important event. Your head, hands, feet and other parts of your body can also feel sweaty during these times too. Aside from it being annoying, sweating actually has a role in regulating your body temperature.  When you get hot, your body makes sweat to cool you down which is important to maintain the right body temperature.

Less than 3% of people have a condition called “hyperhidrosis”. People who have this condition have over-active sweat glands where they make more sweat than is actually needed to keep their body cool. They typically perspire (another word for sweating) through their clothing to the point where they need to change their clothes often. People who have this condition also tend to have rashes on their skin from sweating.

Most of the time, sweating can be controlled by showering or bathing every day, using an antiperspirant (deodorant), and wearing clothes made of natural fabric such as cotton. You might want to try a “clinical strength deodorant” (which you can buy without a prescription) in most pharmacies or general retail stores). This type of deodorant helps lessen both sweating and odor. If you are still bothered by excessive sweating despite these measures, make an appointment with your health care provider.

Do you think men will have a birth control pill? If so, when? https://youngmenshealthsite.org/askus/do-you-think-men-will-have-a-birth-control-pill-if-so-when/ Fri, 21 Sep 2018 16:24:19 +0000 https://youngmenshealthsite.org/?p=100776 ... read more]]>

Although scientists have been working on developing a safe and effective method of oral (taken by mouth) birth control for men, there is nothing available yet. The only birth control options for guys at this time are: abstinence (not having sex), condoms, use of a spermicide, and a vasectomy (which requires a surgical procedure and is permanent). [Note: It’s important to remember there is no perfect birth control method for the prevention of pregnancy, but through consistent use with all sexual activity and closely following the directions for use, you can increase the effectiveness of your chosen birth control method!]

Part of the challenge and perhaps the main reason it is taking longer to develop a birth control method for men is the fact that, while women only make one egg a month, men on the other hand make millions of sperm with each ejaculation. If you think of it like a math problem—it’s easier to prevent 1 egg from reaching a sperm than it is to stop millions of sperm from reaching an egg.

One experiment that tested hormone pills in men was discontinued because some of the men in the study experienced side effects that included: acne, mood swings, weight gain, and a decrease in good cholesterol levels. New studies may look at lower doses of different hormones and finding ways to alter the way sperm swim so they can’t reach and fertilize an egg. Scientists haven’t given up but it will likely take many more years before a birth control pill or other highly effective birth control methods for men are approved and available.
